Week 3: NCAA Ruminations

To the newbies in the pool, I try to share my thoughts on the news and results related to college football for the given week. I've been a bit lax so here's to hoping this gets the ball rolling:

"Dude, you know what would TOTALLY be cool..."
So, during the action yesterday, teams and leagues around the country were leaking news of the impending conference realignments. Anyone get the sense that ADs and college directors are getting bombed at morning tailgates and throwing out missives?

Yesterday's latest was that Pitt and Syracuse have formally applied to join the ACC (they didn't even say if they've completed their SATs yet). This led to speculation that included:
1) The ACC is really targeting a number of 16 members and that the league will be more than willing to be Texas' prison girlfriend to get the Longhorns on-board (a move that the remaining members of the Big 12 are not willing to do). ACC to Texas - sure, you can keep your network!
2) Kansas is also a viable target for the ACC. (I really think Atlantic Cost will have to come out of the name of the league by then.)_
3) Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are as good as gone.

Among these are many other musings. My best guess is that this is all going to move into one giant league of 73 teams that will compete once every four years for a "World Championship" that will ultimately be decided between the winner of this one mega-league, the India-Pakistan cricket champion, the winner of CBS's latest installment of Survivor, and (provided they meet one of two only slightly restrictive provisions) Notre Dame.

UPDATE: Sunday afternoon it was announced that the addition of Pitt and Syracuse was unanimously approved by the 12 member schools of the ACC. It's a done deal.

Expansion Thought Part II
How bad is it to deal with Texas? Think about it...a league with Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Kansas State, Kansas, Mizzou and Colorado couldn't hold it together? Among those programs are some serious heavyweights in either football, basketball, or both. Seriously? Texas must be the Jennifer Anniston of football teams. REALLY hot but no one wants to stay with them.

Speaking of Notre Dame
Dear Michigan State, I continue to be drawn into your web of lies and deceit. Always looking good on paper, never delivering. I'm going to have to do some serious soul searching to decide if I'm willing to invest anymore in this relationship. Sincerely, Ultimate Bill

Just beat sunrise by "that" much
I went to bed not long after the FSU/Oklahoma game. Before retiring I checked in on Tulsa/Oklahoma State to witness the commentators commenting on how it was ridiculous no decision had been made regarding the weather delay that was still in effect as of midnight eastern time. I woke up this morning to find that the kick-off occurred about an hour later.

The decision to play was made partly because neither team has an open date on their schedule for the remainder of the season.

A Sunday noon kick-off wasn't a possibility? I think the TV rating were all ready a loss fellas.

SEC ramblings
Remember three weeks ago when the top 25 polls came out and you couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting one of eight SEC teams on the list? (Bama, LSU, South Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida, and Auburn, for the record) Move to week 3 and we learned a few things about the SEC. 1) Auburn was there just because they were defending national champs. The Tigers are about 62 seconds away from being 0 and 3. This isn't really a huge criticism of Auburn because they definitely went for the marbles last year and it paid off. It's more of a comment of how these polls work. They were in the top 25, just 'cuz. Oh - and they are in 27th this week. 2) Georgia is the same Georgia it has been for years. Think about this...Matt Stafford is making a winner out of the Detroit Lions. He's that good - and Richt couldn't do anything with him. Maybe it isn't fair to judge results in the ultra-competitive SEC. Maybe Richt's a good dude. Georgia should be a lot better than it is and it has been that way for a while. And Georgia got votes this week??? 3) Mississippi state is out largely because it couldn't get two extra inches against Auburn and because it out-dumbed LSU last Thursday. They'll be back in, but they are hardly an elite team.

Looking at who's left in the ranking from the SEC. We have Florida - who probably nabbed two more penalties during the post-game press conference. Apparently the Gators feed off of Muschamp, who, by all accounts, is certifiably insane. LSU - this is the classic Les Miles team. Play like a 6-5 squad but WIN EVERY SINGLE TIME. Look for LSU to cruise to the title game - just feels like it. I can't tell anything about Bama or Arkansas right now. The Coks struggled against Navy but that's no real crime.

ACC Ramblings
FSU couldn't quite get it done against Oklahoma. Not even with the skinniest player in the history of football under center. Maryland fell short in a comeback against WVU (who faces LSU in Morgantown next week). Outside of those two shortfalls - a pretty nice weekend for the league given Clemson beating Auburn and Miami beating Ohio State (which is a shell of itself). In league play, UNC beat Virginia - I have no feeling about that as I despise both institutions equally. BC looks to cruise to it's norma....wait a second...they lost to DUKE!?!?!?! What in the name of Chestnutt Hill? The Hokies have managed not to lose while playing noone and I, for one, am A-OK with that.

Other Ramblings
Seriously, how bad is the Big Ten going to be this year? Ohio State  has carried any national credibility the league had over the last few years and it is simply not a good team. Penn State almost lost to Temple. Michigan State got pantsed by Notre Dame. Nebraska and Wisconsin are Top Ten teams. Can anyone that's watched the Huskers honestly say they are legit Top Ten material? Wisconsin might be the only really strong team the league has.

Brief NFL Note
My son Connor is waking from his nap on Sunday afternoon as I type this. He is talking in his crib and saying "See Jaguars" since dad and Connor were watching the Jags/Jets game. Connor went to nap before the first half was over. I ask the Dad's out there - how do I break the news? This is Luke McCown's line fromt he game:

6 for 19, 59 yards, 1 sack, 0 TDs and 4 interceptions. His QB Rating?  .....  1.8
